I think I am going to go a bit bonkers... I was unable to locate a
store in my area to purchase stamping supplies (I am sure someplace
has to have them, but at least the employees were not much help). So
anyway, I ended up ordering the supplies on the web... 11 days ago and
counting. I am itching to carve my first stamp. I have multiple
designs worked out... new box locations have been scoped out... I even
have my first set of clues written!! *sigh* My fingers are itching to
do some carving but no stuff. Drat!
To make it worse I have pneumonia so I cannot even go out and do more
boxing at the moment. *sigh again*

I did try Michaels, but no luck (as well as a few other art supply
stores); however from what I have read, none of the Michael's stores
seem to have the stuff in the same places and the employees at my
local one do not really have any idea of the types of products they
carry so they are no help.
Thank you very much for the tips on the other locations! I am out
towards a couple of those places on Fridays, so I will definitely
try them out!

If Roseville is not too far, you might try the Michael's across from The
Galleria. That is where I got my carving supplies. They had a starter
kit with the pink stuff as well as some white-ish stuff if you need
more. They are not kept in the rubber stamp area. They are over in an
aisle by the knitting/crocheting, needlepoint, and, I think, fabric
paint section.

Thanks for the tip! I do head out that way on occasion, so it is
good to have multiple places to shop.

I'm pretty rusty on my carving info, but if the white stuff is by
Speedball, I think it's not too good. IIRC, I've read that the white
Speedball is crumbly & not too good for our uses. Or, I could be
thinking of something differently entirely.

Michaels recently changed the way they did a bunch of stuff. They no longer sell "the pink stuff" separately, only in a set with a carving tool and attachments for about $11. Even if you use the 40% off coupon they have in the Sunday paper every other week, it's not cheap. (They don't carry the magazines I used to use my coupon on either!) YOu can find great little books to put in your boxes most of the time though in those bins where everything's $1 or 2 for $1.
Nils is right about University Art. They have a great supply of most everything you need. The really thick white stuff is the very best carving medium and they have it in several sizes with great log books too. Not cheap but quality.
Good luck!

Remember that you can always fall back on Pink Pearl erasers (my
first stamps were carved on them) which can be found almost anywhere
(7-11? Certainly Longs and Walgreens), and even better, the white
version af basic vinyl erasers sold in a 3-pack at Staples. In my
second month of Lbing, I went on the road and had wanted to carve
a hitchhiker, but had forgotten my carving stuff. I found Pink Pearls
in a little drugstore in a tiny, woebegotten town, and the hardware
store had a funny little keychain boxcutter tool that I used to carve.
Funhog gets her supplies from a store near her in Portland, and I went
there when I was passing through. I was pretty impressed with their
prices. I can't remember the name of the place, or if they do mail
order, but you could contact Funhog and ask her.
Have fun carving! aT
